From rugged mountains to amazing vistas the Altiplano de Granada has something to offer everyone.

Hidden away in the far North Eastern part of the Province of Granada is a vast plateau of flatlands, mountains, National Parks and river valleys. Surrounded by the highest peaks of the Bética Mountain Range reaching as high as the Sierra de la Sagre at a height of 2,381 meters.

The overall plateau region is known as 'El Altiplano de Granada.' It is a land of contrasts. High plains covered with sheep and goats and the beautifully typical rural Spanish sight of a Shepherd on his donkey tending his flock.

Due to it's rich natural environment, the Altiplano is a protected area encompassing the Natural Parks of the Sierra de Baza and the Sierra de Castril.

Water being an important issue to these parts, the three lakes of Portillo,  San Clemente and Negratín play a major role in assisting nature's balance and keeping local land fertile for crops and grazing livestock.

Water from these three lakes feeds into the famous river Guadalquivir, via its estuary, the Gaudiana Menor.

Outdoor sports, such as walking, trekking, climbing, horse riding, fishing are all available in the area along with canyoning, kayaking and paddle boarding from local businesses offering rental services.

The unspoiled natural surroundings and abundance of wild life also attracts professional and amateur photographers to capture some incredible images.

Commonly seen are Griffon Vultures, Golden Eagles to Short toed Eagles & Booted Eagles. Red Kites to Black Kites to the more exotic Bee eaters and Hoopoe are just some of the varied and wonderful birds of on your doorstep while Wild Boar and Mouflon roam the mountains and valley floors.

In Spring the fields are a profusion of colour as Poppies ablaze across the fields to a background of azure skies and mountain tops. It truly is an area of contrasts.

Castril de la Pena which sits at the head of the Castril valley clinging to the mountain side and ensconced on the very edge of The Sierra de Castril National Park.

Castril itself it one of the top white villages in Andalucia yet barely discovered by the masses. From its centuries old bull run in October to its 7 days/7 nights music fiesta in midsummer, from its white walled houses to its cobbled streets and fountains it is a delight to meander around taking in the sights and sounds of locals going about their business.

Take the steep street down to the gorge walk and walk the raised wooden boardwalk above the rushing mountain river over a suspension bridge, through a cave and past a beautiful waterfall.

Perhaps stop at the old mill for a well deserved drink (with tapas of course) before continuing the circular walk back into the village.

Welcome to a piece of Spanish paradise.
